Review: Ebates & Superpoints | Online Shopping Canada

Here are my reviews of Ebates & Superpoints - I'm doing two this week since I missed last week :)

How does Ebates work? Here's what their website has to say:

"Ebates is the pioneer and leader of online Cash Back Shopping... Joining Ebates is always free - you'll never pay us anything. And four times a year or more, we'll mail you a Big Fat Check, or transfer the money to your PayPal account if you'd prefer. We can even send the money to your favorite charity. All 100% free. People often ask: "This sounds too good to be true, how are you able to do it?" It really is quite simple. Just like almost every other online shopping center, we get a commission from the stores when you make a purchase. Instead of keeping that money - like almost all other sites do - we share it with you!"

Basically, before you make any on-line purchase, head over to Ebates and see if your desired store is one of their partners. If you open a ticket through Ebates, you will receive cash back on any purchase you make. It's really simple - you get cash back for online purchases you would make anyway!

Now not every partner site provides the same amount of cash back, most go with a percentage, anywhere from 1-25% of the total purchase price, and some give you a set amount. There are times that the percentages increase, usually around holidays & through Ebates' "Daily Double" promotions - so keep an eye out!

How does Superpoints work? Here's how they describe it:
"The SuperPoints network is a website that allows you to earn points, which can later be redeemed for prizes. This exclusive site is invite-based and provides incentives for those who invite more friends. Within the site, you can take surveys, watch videos, shop, and play games in order to win points. Additionally, you receive free points daily through a simple click on the daily Lucky Mail emails. Each point counts and each referral does too! The more referrals you gain, the more points you win! When you have enough points, you can visit the Rewards Catalog to redeem them for prizes ranging from Paypal cash to retailer gift cards to electronics too! We provide a variety of rewards and send them out weekly."
You don't necessarily have to make any purchases on Superpoints to earn points, as you will get daily emails & spins on the SuperLucky Button to earn free points. But, there are also surveys, videos, and offers that you can complete to get additional points (although as a Canadian, I have yet to qualify for a single survey, and have only seen one available video).
It takes a while to amass enough points to receive a reward, unless you sign up a bunch of friends or find an offer that works for you - for example, I just signed up for my one-month free trial on Netflix ($8 value) through Superpoints. This earned me 1500 points - more than enough to immediately redeem for $10 in Paypal Cash or $10 Amazon.ca gift card. So I get a free month, which I can cancel at any time, and $10 for signing up... pretty sweet if you ask me.

How do Ebates & Superpoints compare?

I joined both sites around December of 2011, so about 6 months ago. I've received $30 in rewards from  Superpoints and about $10 back from Ebates - and I haven't really done much to earn that. I do click through my daily emails and sometime spin the SuperLucky Button for Superpoints when I'm bored, but I always forget to head over to Ebates before making online purchases (I've only remembered twice), and then I kick myself when I remember a few days later!

They both do have pretty great referral systems. Ebates will give you $30 for 3 friend referrals or $100 for 10 friends. Superpoints gives you some of the points your friends earn through their site, such as all points they earn through the SuperLucky Button or emails. I would say over half of my earned points have come from the two friends I referred.

Final Thoughts

I would say that both Ebates & Superpoints are worth signing up for if you like rewards & shopping online. They operate on completely different systems, but I've earned rewards through both of them without much effort at all.

Joining Ebates is a must, especially if you are an avid online shopper such as myself - who doesn't want to get money back on stuff you are buying anyways?
Ebates: 4.5/5

Superpoints is worth it for the Netflix deal alone, but it does take a little more time & effort to earn any rewards without signing up friends or completing offers.
Superpoints: 3.5/5
